To My Moore History and Genealogy
Of Wiregrass Georgia

Your Webmistress: Mrs. Pamela D. Hudson
Georgia USA

This page is a brief review of my MOORE family of Southeastern Georgia, commonly called Wiregrass Georgia. These MOORE's are originally from Ireland who immigrated to the New World, and settled in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and other parts of America.

My MOORE connection is via my biological maternal grandmother, Bessie Estelle Moore. She was the daughter of Mathew Howard Moore b:1872 GA d:1944 FL and Rebecca Jane Sweat b:1873 GA d:1950 FL. They are buried in Seminole County, Florida. Mathew was the youngest son of John Moore, IV and Barbara Roberts. Bessie married George Baxter McMahan in Seminole County, Florida. My grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Moore McMahan, died June 1957 and was laid to rest in the LaGrange Cemetery in Titusville, Brevard County, Florida in an unmarked grave. There's more about the McMahan clan at this GeoCities page or go to my Worldconnect link ID "irisheyes" for the complete list of all known descendants with notes and census references to date. There may also be several "unlinked" MOORE in my notes at Worldconnect. Please let me know if you find your ancestors there and can add any further information on them. Perhaps together we can find many MOORE cousins!! :o)

Please remember that this page is mostly just my direct lineage. This family is enormous and I simply do not have the room for everyone here. Also, do not ask me for proof of anything here because I probably don't have it. I would suggest contacting the source(s) that are listed for further info. I only have documents on some of my direct lineage and what I do have is at my Documents I Have page. Please feel free to copy or "take" anything you wish.

For easier understanding, I have marked my Direct Lineage with a heart thusly:

Happy Researching Cousin!

Pamela :o)

Special Note:   Be sure to check my MOORE Marriages Found In Georgia for your family.

Just Added November 2009: A Little Moore Family History by Ron Moore. This is VERY interesting. Y'all need to read it for your own research.

Clan O'More Coat Of Arms

Briefly About The Moore Name

Our MOORE is derived from the Gaelic O'Mordha (descendant of Mordha, a name that meant "great" or "proud" in Gaelic), then changed to O'More and then was Anglicized to Moore - the same name of many families of Anglo-Norman descent. O' meaning grandson or descendant; and mordha meaning stately, noble, or majestic. These same Anglo-Norman Moore's are called de Mora in Irish.

Territory: The O'More's were originally located in County Leix (now spelled Laois). They were the leading sept of the Seven Septs of Leix; the other six - O'Kelly, O'Lalor, O'Devoy or O'Deevey, McEvoy, O'Doran, and O'Dowling - being tributary to them. The O'More's principle residence was Dunamase; a castled crag which served as their stronghold.

The territory of Leix originally belonged to the kingdom of Leinster, but was taken by Ulster and divided into seven tribelands. The O'More family remained in Leix until they were transplanted to Kerry - after their subjugation by the English - by a 1609 treaty.

History: The O'More family has a rich ancestral history. Their eponymous ancestor Mordha was twenty-first in descent from Conal Cearnach, a great hero of the Red Branch - Royal Knights of Emania. One of the many legends surrounding Conal tells of him being in Jerusalem and witnessing Christ's crucifixion. Conal can trace his ancestry back to Raudhri Mo/r - Roderick or Rory the Great.

The name Moore is also an English place name for the man who lived on a moor (heathy mountain), in a fen, or any of the various settlements with this name -- derived from their location near the moor or fen. That version comes from the Old English Mor. Occassionally, Moore is a nickname for the person with swarthy complexion, and sometimes Moore is a Scottish or Welsh nickname for the big man, from the Welsh Mawr (meaning big or great).

My Direct Lineage
From John O'More and Mary Fenwick

Generation No. 1

1. John O'More was born June 15, 1588 in Glasgow, County Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND, and died October 01, 1648 in Antrim, County Antrim, IRELAND. He married Mary Fenwick August 10, 1618 in County Antrim, IRELAND. She was born June 12, 1590 in County Antrium, IRELAND, and died April 18, 1658 in Antrim, County Antrim, IRELAND.

Notes for John O'More:
JOHN O'MORE and MARY FENWICK are my maternal biological 8th great-grandparents. At this time, both of their parents are known only by God. Their religion was Non-Conformist, which, I think, is now called Quakers or "Friends".

HARRIET (HarrietMI) sends us on another journey to the British Isles. This family is from Scotland and Ireland. By way of a very brief, and simplistic, explanation, Northern Island is, even today, a British 'colony.' English landholders were settled on the land in the seventeenth century, and they attracted Protestant families from the Scottish lowlands to rent and cultivate their holdings. They became the genesis of America's vast Scotch-Irish immigration which began about 1740.

MOORE, JOHN     1775-1855     LOWNDES CO, GA
John Moore was born in St. George's Parish, Georgia, in 1775, a son of JOHN MOORE and his wife, WINNIE HARDEMAN MOORE. The elder Moore was a soldier in the Revolutionary War (see page 423, Knight's Roster of the Revolution). His maternal grandfather was THOMAS HARDEMAN. The elder Moore was a native of North Carolina.
JOHN MOORE, the subject, married ELIZABETH JONES, born 1790 in Georgia. They were married about 1808. To them were born seven children.
After living in Emanuel County (Georgia) for some years, JOHN MOORE and family moved to Lowndes County about 1828, and settled near the village of Alapaha (name changed to Milltown about 1853, and then to Lakeland in 1920), in present Lanier County, GA. There he engaged in farming and introduced the cultivation of sugar-cane in this section.
Sometime about 1842-1843, JOHN MOORE as the result of domestic differences, left his wife and children and later went to Florida and took up his residence in Duval County, Florida, where he is found in the Clay Hill District (present Clay County, Florida) in 1840 and 1850 Censuses. There he married MARY PETERSON, born 1810 in Georgia and they had four daughters. They were married April 13, 1854.
Vinson Moore accompanied his father when he left Georgia and went to Florida, but the other children remained here with their mother and supported her until her death in 1850. She lived with her son JOHN MOORE, III, her last years, and at the time of her death JOHN and family were living in the northern part of the new County of Clinch (in present day Atkinson County). She was buried at Antioch Church in present Atkinson County, where her grave is marked and shows the dates "Born 1790. Died 1850."
The records of Union Church show that JOHN MOORE and his wife, ELIZABETH, were baptized by Elder William A. Knight in 1840 into the membership of Union Church. It appears they united with the church on a profession of faith in a service held in the Moore home by Elder Knight, and that he reported it to the church August 8, 1840. On April 8, 1843, JOHN MOORE was expelled but his wife remained a member until her death.

MOORE, JOHN     1821-1886   ATKINSON COUNTY, GEORGIA
JOHN MOORE, a son of JOHN and ELIZABETH JONES MOORE (Volume I), was born in 1821 in Emanuel County (Georgia). He moved with his parents to Lowndes County where he grew up. He was married in 1842 to Miss BARBARA ROBERTS, daughter of GRAY S. ROBERTS (Volume I). She was born October 30, 1824, and died March 10, 1902. To Mr. and Mrs. Moore were born ten children.
When Clinch County was created in 1850, Mr. Moore and his family were cut out of Lowndes County and into the new county. At that time they were living in the 10th Land District not far from the present town of Willacoochee. In 1854, when Coffee County was formed, they were cut into it out of Clinch County. In 1868 he bough the Guest Millpond property now located in Clinch and Atkinson Counties. It had formerly been owned and operated by MILES J. GUEST (see Volume I) until his death in 1865, and it was sold by the Guest administrators to FISHER GRIFFIN who having failed to finihs paying for the property, lost it at Sheriff's sale when it was bought by JOHN MOORE. Mr. Moore operated it several years and sold it to F. M. GUEST, and moved to a farm a mile west of Homerville (Clinch County, GA), which he bought from his son, ELIAS L. MOORE. This consisted of all of Land Lot 497, 7th District. He lived there until his death December 17, 1886. He and his wife were buried at Antioch Church near Kirkland, GA. The old residence where he died, still stands near Homerville, Clinch County, and is kept in a good state of repair by the owner.
Mr. Moore became a Mason in 1859 in Cassia Lodge No. 224, then located at old Magnolia, Clinch County. He was suspended February 28, 1878. He was a member of the Clinch County Board of Education from 1882 until his death.
