A Little About The Boxer Breed & Lucy

Boxer's were originally hunting dogs. This breed is characteristic of a smart appearance, courage, agility, and intelligence. They are good companions and show dogs, but also work equally well as police or military dogs.

They have a blunt face, steady gaze with a hint of mischief, an undeniable joy of life, and incredible grace. The Boxer is affectionate to children and a steadfast friend and guardian to the whole family. They are also muscular, short-coated, square-headed dog with tight skin and a docked tail (Lucy is docked). We have chosen to keep her ears intact (uncut). Males can reach 25 inches at the withers and weight about 70 pounds. Lucy, being female, will be a bit smaller at 21 to 23 inches and about 60 pounds. This breed first entered a dog show in 1850, and now is a popular show dog breed.

The Boxer is another gift to dog owners from Germany. The Boxer is a direct result of mid-nineteenth-century crossings of the Bullenbeisser (mastiff) and bulldog. In Germany, the Molossian type became the Bullenbeisser, a courageous dog that hunted the fierce aurochs, a wild progenitor of domestic cattle. The Bullenbeisser diverged into two types, known as Danzigers and Brabanters after their areas of origin. The Brabanters were the smaller of the two; the Boxer developed from this branch of the family tree.

We brought Lucy to our home April 8th. It was a wet, stormy Tuesday evening here in southeastern Georgia. A real frog strangler. The young lady who bred the parents and raised her the first few weeks was very good to her, I could tell. The parent dogs were also well cared for and had good personalities, something I was told to look for. Lucy stood out in the crowd of six puppies and I just had to have her.

Below are some pictures of our Lucy. Maxie (our miniature schnauzer) and she are getting along like old bud's. I'm so glad. Lucy was 6 weeks old on April 16, 2003 and already displayed LOTS of personality! She's adorable and I know will be an excellent companion for years to come. We happily welcome this little bundle into our family and our hearts.

UPDATE 2006: Sam Jr., formerly my father's dog, now lives with us. Lucy loves Sam so much she treats him as if he were one of her puppies. They're so cute together. :o)

April 2003
She does a lot of eating ....

... and sleeping!!

May 2003
She's grown a bit and is much more aware of her surroundings. Her legs are starting to look like tree trunks. The boxer trademark markings are becoming more prominent. We just wish she'd lose those d*** sharp baby teeth!! The Vet said that would happen soon.

Lucy's version of a 'pot party'. She's such a rascal! :o)

Here she is at 5 months. Baby teeth have all fallen out ... thank goodness. She's 45 pounds and still growing!! I think she's going to be a very large dog, like her sire "Max".

Fully grown and full of energy! She's extremely sweet and even tempered. We also just learned that she travels very well. We Love Our Lucy!

Last time Lucy was weighed (Spring 2005) she now tips the scales at 93 pounds!! Wow!

21 July 2008: Lucy had been limping rather badly for several days. So, we took her to the Vet to be examined. After X-rays, Vet told us she suffered from "ruptured cruciate ligament in the right stifle with arthritic changes in the left hip". What that means is, it's can not be fixed nor changed. She will begin taking a mild pain medication and that stuff people take for joints. This will slow down the degeneration a little and offer some relief. I feel like Lucy has just handed a death sentence. This is how we lost our first big dog, Lady. ♥ ∞

Thank you for visiting! We hope you enjoyed your stay.
Y'all come back again real soon and have a wonderful day.
