A Little About "Gentleman" Henry Hudson, I
(aka Harry HERDSON)

One source styles the father of Henry and William Hudson as "Henry Herdson, Gentleman, Alderman of London, Lord of Manors, etc." Henry was the founding member of the famous Muscovy Company, or Association of Merchant Adventurers, which Sebastian Cabot founded by 1553. The Company was chartered in 1555 and sought a northern route to China, either easterly or westerly.

The Coat of Arms above was taken from the book:
"A Historical Inquiry Concerning Henry Hudson,
His Friends, Relatives And Early Life,
His Connection With The Muscovy Company
And Discovery Of Delaware Bay"
By John Meredith Read, Jr.

Another Of The HUDSON Family Crests

Although the Hudson Coat of Arms has changed over the years, the oldest known Hudson Coat of Arms consists of Three Lions in the Rampant position with three boars heads as supporting badges. The symbolism of the lions signifies rearing with strength, courage and loyalty as character traits. The person who submitted this information states "my research into heraldry did indicate that three lions on a coat of arms is very rare but to date I have not uncovered the significance." The boars' heads were badges that suggested allegiance to the royal arms of King Richard III. King Richard III utilized boars heads as his identifying badges to signify bravery and perservance. Possibly the three lions rampant is significant in idenifying King Richard III also?

The arms of Gentleman Henry Hudson, I (the first generation recorded with this surname) are described as "argent, semee of fleurs de lis gules, a cross engrailed sable". The early Hudson colonists in Virginia utilized a variation of this arms to mark livestock, lending credence to the relationship to Henry.

About the Hudson 'branches':
Many researchers have divided the Hudson family into 'branches' originating with the original four brothers that settled in early Virginia. Of these distinct four 'branches' of the known Hudson family name, I have added yet another to ease research into following direct lines.
The original four are sons of Richard Hudson, II (son of Richard Hudson, I "Immigrant" and Mrs. Mary Tillman Hayes; b:c1634 VA d: 25 Oct 1669 VA) and his wife Mary Bowman (b:15 Feb 1634 VA d: 21 Jun 1690 VA) are:
1) James Hudson "Hudson's Of Henrico" (marr. a cousin, Phebe Hudson)
2) Richard Hudson, III "Hudson's Of Amelia" (marr. Mary Hall)
3) Robert Hudson, I "Hudson's Of Chesterfield" (marr. Mary Margaret [Ffarguson] Ferguson)
4) William Hudson "Hudson's Of Hanover" (marr. Mary Elizabeth Jennings)

I added yet another 'branch'. They are the "Hudson's Of Maryland" or as one researcher aptly calls them, "Hudson's Of The East Coast". They migrated about the same time as the above and stayed in the Maryland area of the United States. These folks are descendants of Henry Hudson, son of Richard Hudson, I "Immigrant" and Mrs. Mary Tillman Hayes, and wife Lydia "Lidda" Smith, daughter of Henry and Ann Smith. There is another researcher that has done a great deal of research on this line of Hudson's.

This Branch Of Hudson's Of Amelia Brief History:
One of many original settlers of early Virginia, the Carolina's, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Texas.

  Generation No. 10

1. Elijah Hudson (Joakim (Joachim)9, Hall8, Richard "of Amelia"7, Richard "of Henrico"6, Richard "The Immigrant"5, William4, William (Herdson)3, Henry "Harry"2 Herdson I, Rudulphus "Rudolph Hudson"1) was born 1769 in Virginia, and died Nov 1843 in Hudsonia near Grange, Jefferson County, Georgia. He married (1) Unity "Uni" Matthews Bet. 1789 - 1794 in Darlington District, South Carolina, daughter of Moses Matthews and Martha Ann Cox. She was born 1775 in Darlington District, South Carolina, and died 1820 in Hudsonia near Grange, Jefferson County, Georgia. He married (2) Sarah "Sally" Fontaine   Jan 10, 1821 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Georgia, daughter of Peter Benjamin Fontaine  and Mary [Brewton] Bruton . She was born 1780 in Old Dobbs (nka Wayne) County, North Carolina, and died Nov 02, 1841 in Harrell's District, Warren County, Georgia buried Jefferson County.

From the Columbus Enquirer, Muscogee Co, GA, Vol III, 1838-1840 --
Ran away from the subscriber on the night of the 25th December, Joe, black complexion, 23 years old, 6 feet high, round shouldered and stoops a little in his walk. Esther, the sister of Joe, light complexion, 18 years old, slender built, pleasant countenance. The above negroes are both the property of HARDY MORGAN of Jefferson County. Shade, 25 years old, light complexion, well built, good countenance, the property of ELIJAH HUDSON. Ann, the wife of Joe and sister of Shade, over the common size, 22 years old, light complexion, the property of E(lijah) T(isdale) HUDSON. There went off at the same time Mike, the property of WILLIAM DAVIS, light complexion, 35 years old, stout built, large whiskers, thick lips, is a blacksmith and root doctor and is intelligent. Also, Ben, the property of MALANA HATCHER, 23 years old, stout built, low in stature, dark complexion, is a fiddler. It is believed that the above negroes were taken off by one SOLOMON WILEY HATCHER, who was raised in the neighborhood, and one of the negroes belonged to his mother. He has not been seen since. Hatcher is of fair complexion, 6 feet high, 25 years of age, gray eyes, dark hair, is fond of spirits and gaming and by no means intelligent, and is fond of the company of colored people. Direct any written information in relation to the above Hatcher and negroes addressed to either of the undersigned at Fenn's Bridge Post Office, Jefferson County, Georgia.
(Signed): Hardy Morgan, Elijah Hudson and E. T. (Elijah Tisdale) Hudson.
--------
ELIJAH HUDSON's place of burial is an assumption based on where he and family supposedly attended Church at that time. He could actually be buried on the original Hudsonia property. White pine wood markers were made for most of the graves in Georgia in the early 1800's. There were numerous fires in the area and many markers (and documents) were destroyed because of this. Even if the markers had survived any fires, they did not survive time and have since rotted away. Thus, there are many "unmarked graves" and "sinks" at this cemetery.

Elijah's birth place has been assertained from 2 of his son's comments in 2 of the Federal Census'. Elijah's father Joachim did not move to Anson County, North Carolina until ca. 1777 and ELIJAH was supposedly born in 1769. The family moved on to Darlington District, South Carolina. Some of this was derived from the kindly research of Mr. Samuel J. Whigham who corresponded with the Darlington Historical Commission Center, who said that the date of 1769 was from a statement made by Elijah's son, George Franklin Hudson, that his father was twelve (12) years old at the close of the Revolutionary War.
Joachim's first land purchase in Anson County, North Carolina was 24 September 1777.

Notes for Sarah "Sally" Fontaine:
SARAH FONTAINE's first husband was JAMES THREEWITTS (sometimes spelled: Threewits / Threewins / etc). She used the name SARAH THREEWITTS when she married a second time to ELIJAH HUDSON.
SARAH THREEWITTS has no spouse living with her by 1820. She is living with two males (1-10 to 15 yrs, 1-18 to 25 yrs) and one female (0 to 10 years) in the 1820 Jefferson County, GA Federal Census, Enumerated on 27 January 1821. So, there were two THREEWITTS sons by her and first husband JAMES: 1 born 1805-1810 and 1 born 1795-1802 probably in North or South Carolina.
Old Dobbs County, NC no longer exists. To find the current county go to: www.rootsweb.com/~ncdobbs/dobbs.htm .
The name FONTAINE is sometimes translated as FONTAIN or FOUNTAIN.
SARAH FONTAINE (THREEWITTS) HUDSON apparently divorced ELIJAH HUDSON and married JAMES K. TURNER of Lenoire, North Carolina. They resided in Warren County, GA until her death. No burial location has been found to-date.

Charles Cain Hudson, Jr. and 1st wife Elizabeth Florence Amold are Steve's grandparents.

Most of the family never met Charles Jr. because he abandoned his wife Elizabeth while pregnant in the late 1920's and chose to remain estranged. We are told that he spent time in the Levenworth Prison, Kansas (time unknown) for the felony charges of check forgery. These records have not been found. Because of Charles' abandonment, and other factors, the family is in tatters and scattered to the wind from which it has not yet recovered.

Charles Jr. died of "acute cardiac failure due to arteriosclerotic heart disease" at Heights Hospital, Harris County, Houston, Texas. The funeral was held by Heights Funeral Home, Houston, TX. His age was 64 years at the time of his death. His address was: 104 South 66th, Houston, TX. The Certificate also states he was divorced at the time of his death.
