Howells - (hew-el; sometimes said rhyming with towel) from the Welsh personal name Hywel, anglicized to Howell. Hoel, Hoell, HOLE, Holl, Howel, Howell, Howes, Hywel, Powell.

JACOB HOLE was a Revolutionary War soldier. His first cousins Daniel and John, sons of his father's brother Daniel Hole, also are listed as fighting in the Revolution. Jacob and some of his children moved to Ohio in 1815 where he built the Augusta Meeting House (Quaker) in 1816. He and his wife Mary Thomas are buried in the Quaker Ridge Cemetery, formerly the Augusta Cemetery, in Carroll County, Ohio.
