WHAT ARE BASTARDY BONDS?
Pre-welfare State (socialism), bonds were posted because of the birth or impending birth of a bastard child. As it should be, these bonds were intended to protect the county or parish (i.e. you, the taxpayer) from the expense of raising the child of irresponsible actions. When the pregnancy of an unmarried woman, or actual birth of the child was brought to the attention of the court, a warrant was issued and the woman brought into court. She was examined (questioned) under oath and asked to delare the name of the child's 'father'. The reputed father was then served a warrant and required to post bond. If the woman refused the name of the father, she, her father or some other interested party would post the bond. In some cases, the mother and reputed father posted the bond together. If the woman refused to post bond or declare the father, she was often sent to jail.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Unfortunately, the authors stopped noting names at 1879 because some of the people might still be alive at that time. Also, the book is lacking any further explanations except that which is stated above, so, expect errors. They didn't bother to explain why there are more than one 'bondsman' usually listed on the bond. It was really hard to follow who was who but I have done my best. If you know who any of the players were in this life's drama, I would be interested in knowing their parentage. If I could find anything further about the following people, I so noted next to their names (i.e. possible parentage, burial locations, etc.). Please remember, I have no further info than what is posted here. If you wish to have a copy of the original bond or bond book entry it is suggested to contact the North Carolina State Archives and order one from same.

I hope this helps! Happy Researching Y'all! :o)
