The photos above are my maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Jane Green McMahan. She was the second wife of General Gates McMahan. The photo on the left was taken in either 1935 or 1955 in central Florida, probably Seminole County or Brevard County, and is courtesy of cousin Mrs. Mary Buchanan Coffey. The photo on the right was taken shortly before her passing 1964 and is courtsey of my first cousin Mr. Benjamin Harrison McMahan, Jr. I am deeply indebted to these wonderful cousins for their generosity and kindness! Thanks dear ones!

William Green (1753-1832), son of Joseph and Mary McEntire (McIntire) Green, and husband of Drucilla McBrayer (or McBrier, McBriar). My William Thomas Green (1820-1862 CSA - photo above) was his grandnephew. I am William Green's (1753-1832) 5th great grandniece.

William Green (1753-1832) of Rutherford County, NC, became very active in building the new nation. In 1798 he served in the North Carolina House of Commons. He then was elected to serve fourteen terms in the North Carolina State Senate between 1800 and 1824. This photo is from the North Carolina Archives.

If you believe that there is a connection or have corrections / additions to my Green(e) family, please e-mail me directly and put "Green Genealogy" in the subject line. I am learning more about them as time progresses, so, information is subject to change without notice. :o) I have found a terrific western North Carolina genealogy web site at: http://rfci.net/wdfloyd/index.html, W. D. "Bill" Floyd's (SADLY NOW OFF-LINE). It was very well done web site. God bless that wonderful man. I've found many, many answers there.

I have posted much, much more about the GREEN family at my Worldconnect at Rootsweb web site (ID "irisheyes"). Some of them may be 'unlinked' GREEN and GREENE that I found interesting living in and around Rutherford County, NC, and thought others could use in their research.

Thank you for stopping by. May you find all your genealogy questions soon .. and ...
Happy Researching Y'all!  Pamela 8o}

7. William Thomas Green (Joseph Nathaniel19, Jacob18, Joseph17, John16, James "of Potowomut"15 Greene, John "the Surgeon"14, Richard13, Richard12, Robert11, Robert10 De Greene, John9, Thomas8, Henry7, Henry6, Thomas5, Thomas De Greene4 De Boketon, John De Greene3, Walter2, Alexander1) was born May 25, 1820 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and died Abt. He married Catherine "Kate" Rogers November 07, 1841 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, daughter of Isaac Rogers (b:c1802 NC d:unk) and Elizabeth Burns (b:c1800 NC d:unk). She was born Abt. 1825 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and died Aft. January 12, 1880 in Bryson City (fka Charleston Township), Swain County, North Carolina.

Notes for William Green:
WILLIAM THOMAS GREEN and CATHERINE "Kate" ROGERS / RODGERS are my maternal 3rd great-grandparents.

Mrs. Mary Coffey's Grandmother says WILLIAM GREEN died at Strawberry Plains, Jefferson County, TN during The War Of Northern Aggression ('Civil War'). Also that middle initial was T, and she thought Thomas. He possibly fought with the same CSA unit as son Jesse A. Green (note on CSA records says Jesse N. Green). My family history was that he joined the service but came home sick and died there. SOURCE: Another GREEN family researcher.

MY NOTES: Our WILLIAM GREEN was the right age and born in the right place to be Joseph and Margaret's proven son "William (Graham? or Thomas?) Green". His middle name of "Graham" or "Thomas" has not be proven yet either. I believe that either our WILLIAM GREEN had no middle name, or it is the 'GRAHAM' or perhaps 'THOMAS' as stated by others. Verbal history should always be taken with a grain of salt anyway, and the letters 'G' and 'T' can sound a great deal alike after so many decades. :o)

Company A, 16th REG INF NC
William Green, 3rd Lieutenant
Resided in Jackson County where he enlisted at age 43.
Appointed 3rd LT to rank 4-27-1861. Present and accounted for until he resigned on February 27, 1862, by reason of "general prostration of the system from Typhoid Fever and chronic brochitis".

His son Jesse appears in Confederate Rolls for Jackson County, NC (16th Regiment).

The following are listed for Jackson County, NC: William Green, 3rd Lieutenant, Jackson County, NC. Enlisted age 43. Resigned Feb 27, 1862, of "general prostration of the system from typhoid and chronic Bronchitis". The age puts this William as our possible ancestor. Did he possibly re-enlist? or did he die from illness contacted in the war?? I think it is possible he did not die in Tennessee, but returned home and died. (The age here is correct for our William).

We have William Green, 16th Regiment, Company N, enlisted in Jackson County, NC; from Rutherford County, NC. Place and date of enlistment not reported. Paroled at Greensboro, NC on May 19, 1865. "Family History" says William Green was killed in the Civil War around Strawberry Plains, TN. So far I have found no verification. The 16th Regiment, which possibly William served in, did see action at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee.

Rutherford County Marriage Bonds: William Green and Catherine Rodgers, Nov 7, 1841. Bondsman: John Freeman. Witness: George W. Logan, CLK. Bond #: 000133761.
MY NOTE: Even though the Marriage Bonds show her maiden name as RODGERS (with a "D") I believe that her name was actually ROGERS (no "D"). It seems that all the families in that area at that time were ROGERS (per documents). This is just my opinion. I am still searching for Mrs. CATHERINE ROGERS GREEN SHERRILL's burial place which, I assume, is in Swain or Jackson County, North Carolina.

Notes for Mary Jane Green:
MARY JANE GREEN is my maternal great great grandmother. The birthfather of my Eliza Jane GREEN is still in question. Regrettably, those records were destroyed in a courthouse fire and lost to history.

Mary Jane Green never married. "Family History" says Jane was sent to help move family belongings with two men, ANDREW WATKINS AND JOHN PARRISH. One of these two is the father of George Green but is not necessarily the father of her other children.

Mrs. Mary Buchanan Coffey, a direct descendant of her son GEORGE GREEN, has a postcard to George dated January 1914. It stated to "come at once" and that his mother was very sick with a cancer of the breast. This postcard was sent from Swain County, NC. SOURCE: Mary B. Coffey

GEORGE GREEN lived with the WATKINS some as he was growing up. He was living with them at the age of 3 years in 1880 Charlestown, Swain Co, NC Federal Census with his mother as "Servant".

The Watkins had two other children that we know of:
Andrew WATKINS who later lived in California
Elvira WATKINS who married Will MONTEITH - issue: May Monteith, Pearl Monteith

ANDREW WATKINS b. Oct. 1842, d. Sept 7, 1918, his wife SARAH MELVINA "Sally" WIGGINS WATKINS b. June 03, 1840 Macon Co, NC, d. May 22, 1914, are buried in the Randall Cemetery, Swain County, NC. Listed in the Fontana Dam Project. From Bryson City, take S.R. 1333 (Toot Hollow Rd.) two and 1/10 miles. The cemetery is on the left of the road. Easy to find, it is right beside the road.

JOHN PARRISH lived on Conley's Creek, Swain County, NC.

"Family History" says Jane was 14 when she had George, but the dates do not agree. Jane was born in 1845, George Green was born in 1879. Also Jane had other children before George.

Jane is supposed to be buried in Swain County, NC. But I have not found a death certificate or tombstone. Delayed birth certificate for George Green in Swain County, NC gives Jane as mother, born in Rutherford County, NC in 1845.

Mary Jane Green is listed on the 1900 Census for Haywood County, North Carolina with J. T. KILBY and wife LAURA (GREEN) KILBY. Lists her incorrectly born in 1854. Interestingly it gives Jane as a widow, with 11 living children!?? We only know of 5 for sure. The Kilby's are living next door to William Taylor Wilson and Martha Rachel Wilson, brother and sister. Martha Rachel Ann Wilson married George Zachery Taylor Green, son of Jane Green, and brother of Laura Green Kilby. This is our 'Marietta Jane Green'.

JANE GREEN was forced to name the father(s) of her children in court!

Notes for William Pendleton "Penn" Hyde:
William Pendleton "Penn" HYDE was the illegitimate son of CATHERINE "Peggy" HYDE (b:30 Sep 1819 Burke Co NC d: 20 Apr 1896 NC) and WILLIAM HOLLAND "Little Will" THOMAS (b:05 Feb 1805 Haywood Co NC d: 17 May 1893 NC). Mr. Thomas and Miss Hyde had at least 5 children together (per Worldconnect submitter ID "Church Grove").

W. P. HYDE 1st married SUSANNAH EMILY BATTLE (b:c1842 NC d:08 May 1896 Swain Co NC) on 03 November 1875 in Whittier, Jackson Co, NC, d/o Walker Battle(s) and Mary Jenkins;
W. P. HYDE 2nd married PARSEY ANN LOVINA CAGLE (b:04 Jul 1865 Haywood Co NC d: 24 Apr 1963 Swain Co NC) on 28 August 1896 in Oconoalufty, Swain Co, NC, d/o Jacob Cagle and Martha L. J. Caldwell.

Since my Jane Green and William Pendleton Hyde seemed to follow one another about in the Census' records there's a chance that he also fathered some of her other children? Or perhaps he just wanted to be near his first born child. At any rate, I do have a strong reason to believe that he may be the birth father of my ELIZA JANE GREEN also.

She was born March 28, 1882 in Pigeon River Township, Haywood County, North Carolina, and died February 05, 1957 in Ocala, Marion County, Florida but buried in Haywood Co, North Carolina.

Notes for George Zachary Taylor Green:
Arthur Green died when he was 14 of pneumonia, which would be the year 1920. He is buried somewhere in Swain County, North Carolina.

George Z. T. Green married Racheal Martha Ann Thomas (Wilson) on 22 November 1903 in Haywood County, NC.

Ada GREEN was born in Union County, Georgia. George Green probably went to Georgia to live near his uncles. He returned to Swain County by 1920, where he appears on the 1920 Census. According to family history one of the above "fathers" wanted him to live with and take care of him. He would then leave him his property. However, upon his death his legal family refused to acknowledge this fact. (Ref. Ada Green).

George and Racheal are buried on Allen's Creek in Haywood County, NC, in the cemetery of the Allen's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery located at the end of the road. Their daughter Juvernia Green is buried beside them. She died at a nursing home in Bryson City. Prior to that she lived in Oviedo, Seminole County, Florida at the home of her parents (George and Racheal). She then moved back to Sylva, Jackson County, North Carolina to live with her sister Ada.

George and Racheal moved to Florida after their children were grown. George's sister Mrs. Eliza "Liza" Green McMahan lived in the same area. (Oviedo, Seminole County, FL, Silver Springs area) The property now belongs to a grandson Pete Hooper.)

51. Eliza Jane "Liza" Green (Mary Jane21, William20, Joseph Nathaniel19, Jacob18, Joseph17, John16, James "of Potowomut"15 Greene, John "the Surgeon"14, Richard13, Richard12, Robert11, Robert10 De Greene, John9, Thomas8, Henry7, Henry6, Thomas5, Thomas De Greene4 De Boketon, John De Greene3, Walter2, Alexander1) was born August 04, 1879 in Oconaluftee (Oconee Lufty Township), Swain County, North Carolina, and died January 01, 1965 in Winter Park Hospital, Winter Park, Orange County, Florida at 1:40 am but living at Vine Road, Oviedo, Seminole County, FL. She married General Gates McMahan March 13, 1902 in the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Oconaluftee, Swain County, NC, son of John McMahan and Rutha Martha Dillard. He was born May 24, 1869 in Barkers Creek, Jackson County, North Carolina, and died January 25, 1940 in his home in Oviedo, Seminole County, Florida at 8:15 pm.

Notes for Eliza Jane "Liza" Green:
ELIZA JANE "Liza" GREEN and GENERAL GATES McMAHAN are my biological maternal great grandparents.

General Gates McMahan and Eliza Jane Green McMahan had ten children. Their son George Baxter McMahan and his 1st wife Bessie Estelle Moore are my grandparents. More about my grandparents is at this link.

ELIZA JANE GREEN was mistakenly referred to as ELIZA JANE CANNE in one of her daughters Obituary's. I'm told the birth-father could have been JOHN PARRISH or ANDREW WATKINS / WATSON. My money is on ANDREW WATKINS because some the family lived with him for a period of time. What I need, though, are Swain County, NC Bastardy Bonds to prove it! I'm told that there were many men involved and each child had a different father, so, I currently do not know who her daddy was. Maybe even she didn't know.

On June 1st, 1900, ELIZA "Liza" GREEN was a Servant for THOMAS and LAURA JENKINS in the Oconaluftee "Oconee Lufty Township", Swain Co, NC Federal Census. Also living there as a Servant was DAVID F. EDWARDS (age 16, b: June 1883 NC). ELIZA GREEN was not too far from where GENERAL GATES McMAHAN and first batch of children lived.

ELIZA JANE "Liza" GREEN was not married before GENERAL GATES McMAHAN as was previously rumoured. North Carolina Marriage License :: "ELIZA GREEN, single, age 21, of Oconaluftee married G. G. McMAHAN, age 33" also of Oconaluftee, son of JOHN McMAHAN of Jackson County, on 13 March 1902 in Swain County, North Carolina. Swain County borders Jackson County and was actually formed from Jackson and Macon for political reasons involving the Cherokee Indians. Oconaluftee, sometimes spelled "Oconoluftee" or "Ocona Lufee" and referred to as "Luftee", was on the Jackson / Swain line and was where the present day Indian Reservation and entrance to the Great Smokies National Park lies today.
